I just finished watching an old black and white movie titled, "Mrs. Miniver" which takes place in England back at the beginning of World War II. What struck me so hard was the portrayal of these middle-class people's lives being affected so dramatically by war that was being fought on their own soil. It hit home to me how blessed we are in this country to be so protected by the Lord. However, if the people of this great land continue to forget God, it will not be so protected. It is vital that we work hard at keeping the commandments and the covenants we've made and then spreading the gospel to all so that we can make this land safe through the righteous living of its citizens.
It also came to my mind and heart very strongly the memory of 9/11 - that happened on our own soil. It was an awful loss of lives and yet today, we have political leaders who would have us forget - who decry the war and want to pull out of Iraq. It is important that we remember the war is our war, too! We go about our daily lives as if nothing is happening and yet our boys and girls are giving their lives. Seems like we need to be more supportive in whatever way we see fit. It's as simple as writing letters or voting to as complicated as actually joining the war. We probably all know someone who is serving or has served or will be serving and we owe them and their families our thanks and appreciation for their sacrifices.
Thanks be to God that we are in America, that we have freedom and liberty (albeit there are many who strive to take it away from us ever so subtly), that we are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My heart is full and I would recommend this movie to all. It certainly sobered me and brought me to more of an appreciation of my blessings.
