Burley Trip

Last weekend, we went to Burley to see Megi perform as the Baroness Shraeder in "The Sound of Music." What a wonderful performance she gave both in acting and singing. The movie musical does not have the Baroness singing, but in this play, she had two songs and Megi truly did a great job! As a bonus to that trip, we were able to spend time with our 4 precious grandchildren. We were treated to snow on Monday and the girls had fun attempting to make a snowman and making snow angels. Cru is growing fast and will be out there frolicing in the snow before we know it. It was a wonderful!
On our way to Burley, we stopped in Provo with Boyce, Suz, and Gracie and had a wonderful evening with them. Gracie is so full of personality and and is taking steps! We so appreciate their letting us stop on our way to Burley.

My story. I’m doing well now. I had a rough week, but was able to fit in all the fun stuff, so that’s the best part.

Boyce and Suzanne arrived here Saturday, the 17th and left Gracie with us for a few days while they had a getaway. We took care of her from Sunday night until Thursday night.

Friday night, we got a sitter for Gracie and the four of us went to see “Sherlock Holmes.” Then at about midnight, I woke up feeling awful and threw up off and on all night long. Doug had had this junk the Tuesday before and shared it with me! Saturday, Boyce and family left for home and I was pretty thrashed, but by evening felt much better and so we made a few last-minute deliveries and did our 12 Days People before coming home for the evening. Sunday morning, Doug took his weekly trek to the prison and I stayed home watching “The Nativity Story.” Went to Church and loved our meeting – all music! We came home, opened our presents, and then went to Christmas dinner with Rolland and LaVelle's family at Karen, their daughter's house. We had a fabulous feast and loved being with family. Upon getting home, after about an hour, I began to experience some pain in my right side and it just kept increasing until I couldn’t stand it anymore and off we went to the ER, thinking maybe I had appendicitis or a bowel blockage. Upon arriving, they thought it more likely a kidney stone. They gave me pain meds and took me for a CAT scan which revealed a bowel blockage due to the hernia. The ER was CRRAAZY that night and I waited quite a while for a 2nd dose of pain medication which took away the pain, but caused me major nausea and throwing up. I got to a room at about 3:30 in the morning and the pain was gone. Maybe throwing up caused everything to go back in place. It was decided surgery was needed just the same because it would happen again. I went into surgery about 5:00 on Monday and they cut me open and repaired two hernias. I was in the hospital until Wednesday afternoon and am recovering nicely here at home. It’s been very painful – not the incision so much as where they repaired. I have about a 6-inch incision below my belly button and have 16 staples. Anyway, every day it gets a little less painful and I’m sleeping pretty well. So there’s my story!

Thanksgiving in Arizona

The family gathered in Arizona for Thanksgiving this year, being hosted by Jerel and Camille and Shad and Jodi. We spent most of our time all together at one of the other's houses.

Our 20th grandchild was born September 6 to Megi and Ty Jones. Cru Von Jones joined his three big sisters and what a happy family they are! I drove to Burley and then spent 10 wonderful, busy days helping out and loving on those 4 grandchildren and then drove home. It was a happy time; I just wish Doug could have come, too. We are thankful for the safe arrival of this precious little boy!

Shad, Jodi, Owen, and Nya came to town for a quick visit this past Friday night. We got in lots of visiting, picked pumpkins out of the garden, they went swimming at their other grandparents' house, had a delicious trip to Rosemary's and good visits with old friends. We loved having them in church with us on Sunday. Then they were off to Lindy's for Sunday night and then home on Monday. We love these children and grandchildren and are thankful they came out of their way to see us!

We had a wonderful Vergil & Joan Fewkes reunion in Vernal, UT. We mostly sat around and talked. The little cousins had fun playing together and in the pool, playing water balloon games, thanks to Camie, playing miniature golf, riding around on the rented vehicles. At night, we gathered around a campfire. Some of us visited Flaming Gorge Dam, which was quite amazing. Due to the large amount of precipitation this year, they are releasing as much water as they can through these gigantic tubes. Several of us went to the Vernal temple on Thursday and that night was our testimony meeting. Friday night was the talent show with the finale being the TIGER HUNT. That's a fabulous tradition! We finished the week with a huge family breakfast and all departed to their separate destinations until another three years! Family is forever!

Mid May, Lindy needed a hospital stay and so I took care of the kids at their apartment for a week and then brought AJ here for the second week. What a busy boy! He loved walking in grandpa's slippers! (Notice how he's wearing them!) At the end of the two weeks, Lindy and Jonathan came here to pick up their little guy and we took Ruthie to the Neville's "Safari" party which she thoroughly enjoyed as did we!

Mid April, we held a cousin reunion for Doug's Dad's side of the family. All but one of the living cousins attended. We met for dinner Friday night right here in Bakersfield. Saturday morning, we spent the morning visiting and then went to lunch before saying our goodbye's. Fun time for all!

Spring Vacation

For Spring break, we took a trip with Lindy, Jonathan, Ruthie, and AJ to Bishop, CA. We received a lot of questioning looks and raised eyebrows when we told folks where we were going. But we had such a good time and didn't have to fight crowds. On our way, we stopped at Manzanar, which is the relocation camp for the Japanese people back in World War II. It was very sobering to learn about this time in history. There is a wonderful museum and video there as well as the restoration of the housing they lived in.

We stayed in a nice motel in Bishop right next to a park. We spent a lot of time in the park letting the kids play and feeding the ducks! Schat's Bakery gave us a huge grocery bag of bread heels and crusts for $1, so we fed the ducks on several occasions. Doug and Jonathan enjoyed some of that bread as well! LOL!

After our hiking, we visited Law's Railroad Museum. We also found a store that sells fabulous jerky of all kinds and flavors.

Saturday morning, we packed up and headed home, stopping at the fish hatchery on our way. We were disappointed to learn that it's no longer functioning as a hatchery. There were many fish in the pond out front and so we enjoyed feeding the fish! AJ got nipped a bit by one of the fish and so Ruthie was shy about touching the fish. Lindy was able to finally coax her into it and she giggled when she actually touched one! We went on to Lone Pine and ate lunch and then said our goodbyes as we would go to our homes via different routes. We had a wonderful time!

In April, Megi and Suzanne came to town to be judges for the junior miss competition and so we enjoyed their girls all week long. The weekend, Boyce and Ty joined them as did Lindy and Jonathan and their two! Boyce and Suzanne and Gracie stayed with us through the next week and we cared for Ruthie and AJ for a couple of days while Lindy and Jonathan had a little getaway. It was a grand time to picnic and feed ducks at Hart Park, to see the girls run through the sprinklers, and to just enjoy them!

Great Strides

Saturday, March 26, was our annual Great Strides event where we go to the Park at River walk here in Bakersfield and walk a 5K to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. We are on a team called "Steps4Sisters. It's the culmination of our fund raising each spring. We are so thankful to all of our family and friends who helped us raise almost $9000 this year - a little short of our goal - but we are thankful to all for the sacrifices made.

Wonderful Weekend

This past Friday, Doug and I drove to Provo to attend the blessing of Grace, Boyce and Suzanne's little baby girl. Shortly after we arrived, Megi and her family got there. Suzanne's dad and step mom were already there and so began a wonderful time together as family. They fed us like royalty and we took an excursion to the BYU creamery on Saturday afternoon. It was fun to be together. Sunday came early because of the time change; church started at 9! Whew! But we made it with time to spare. After our meetings, we had a fabulous luncheon with homemade potato/cheese soup in bread bowls, a variety of salads, and cake for dessert! Many of their friends came as well as one of my brothers, two of my sisters and their husbands, and cousins galore!

Our grandson, Riley, turned 14 in January and could boast that he'd earned his Eagle Scout.

So on February 5, we drove to Henderson, NV to witness him receiving this very prestigious award. He looked so handsome and had worked hard, very deserving of Scouting's highest honor. It was a joy to be with lots of family and friends, to rejoice in this happy occasion and then to celebrate at dinner afterward. It was worth every mile and every minute to be in attendance.

Sunday, February 6, we traveled to Thousand Oaks to witness the baptism of our oldest granddaughter, Ginny. Doug gave the opening prayer; I gave the closing prayer. Ginny's other grandma spoke about baptism and Jonathan spoke about the Holy Ghost. Eric baptized and confirmed Ginny and I'm very thankful he holds the priesthood and can perform these ordinances. He gave Ginny such a wonderful blessing; it was easy to sense his love for his little daughter and for the gospel. It was powerful and humble. Afterwards, we went to their apartment where they fed us a wonderful meal and we enjoyed our association there our son, his wife, and our four grandchildren. Kristi's mother and friend were also there. It was a very lovely occasion and we arrived home feeling greatly rewarded.

Grace Kathleen Campbell was born January 10 to Boyce and Suzanne. She is our 19th grandchild and we are so happy and so thankful for this beautiful baby girl. I went up to Provo on the 11th and spent the week helping out and cuddling that adorable baby. Boyce and Suzanne are terrific parents. Doug came up Friday and spent the long weekend and we drove home yesterday filled with happy memories and joy in our posterity!

Not posting photos this time, but decided to write about my season so far. I've had ups and downs with my emotions for many reasons. Overall, this time of year brings me happiness and peace. In light of a RS lesson and also the words of Pres. Uchtdorf, we are trying to simplify. Because of that I have found a little less stress and more time to enjoy movies and music. I love that! We didn't put lights outside the house this year and much to the chagrin of many of you, we didn't put up our tree. Everything else is out and is so beautiful. Because we won't have any of our family here for Christmas, it just seemed too hard to put up the tree and have it empty underneath.

In the meantime, I've been doing some fun sewing of princess dresses; I made our Christmas greeting and sent a lot out via Email and the rest by snail mail. I made 30 jars of pomegranate jelly yesterday to give to our neighbors and friends. I've helped with the ward Christmas party program for this coming Saturday. Doug has been very busy with his men at the prison helping them give gifts to their loved ones. I've done the actual ordering of Books of Mormons and different videos that these men wanted sent. It's a joy to serve in this way and in a way we feel this is our mission for now.

The thing that is making this Christmas very special is that we are having our family reunion the whole week between Christmas and New Year's and I can hardly wait to be with these amazing people whom I love so much! Of course, we will miss our Shannon and Boyce and Suzanne. Their spirits will be with us for sure.

We said goodbye to our wonderful dog, Kodi, this morning. She was afflicted with diabetes which took over, causing her blindness, loss of her coat, loss of weight and appetite. The vet was doubtful that she could be pulled out of it.

She was born in September of 2003 making her 7 years old. When we got her as a pup, she was so furry that she looked like a baby bear, thus the name Kodi (Kodiak bear). She wasn't a very obedient dog, but she had love pouring out of her heart for us, especially for Doug. She loved all the grandkids and they loved her!

Last weekend I met my three sisters in St. George Friday afternoon until Tuesday noon. We attended the temple, went to church, saw a movie, ate out, snacked, shopped for books and misc. stuff. The majority of our time was spent in our motel room sharing life's experiences complete with laughter, tears, gospel study, opinions, talking to our husbands and some of our kids via cell phones and just plain enjoying time spent together. It was very relaxing and renewing. I love these three little sisters of mine so much!

Volunteering at Bakersfield Business Conference

My Walkie Talkie friends and I volunteered at the Bakersfield Business Conference last Saturday and what a day it was! I was there by 5:30 a.m. to do my shift until 1:30 p.m. The others had various shifts and places to work, but we managed to find lots of time to be together and enjoy the events. By the end of the day, I had heard Joe Clark, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Goldie Hawn, Carl Rove, Rudy Giuliano, Peter Lemon, Rich Little, and Chesley Sullenberger! What an exhilarating experience! We were able to have all the food and drink we wanted throughout the day and then in the evening there was entertainment complete with a fireworks show that bettered Disneyland's from what I'm told. Got home about 10:30 - very tired but so rewarded. I am thankful I could do a community service and feel that I was really the one that got the best of the deal. Five more years and if I'm still kickin' I'll do it again!

This past weekend, we attended a family reunion for Doug's cousins on his mother's side. Eight of the nine living attended and so they had a wonderful visit together, renewing family bonds through photo albums and scrapbooks and their memories of past experiences. Saturday, September 25, our little grandson, Adrian, was sealed to Lindy and Jonathan and Ruthie for time and eternity in the Los Angeles Temple. What a joyous occasion that was to witness such a sacred ordinance and we are thankful for this little guy and that he's now a part of our family forever! There were many friends and lots of family to be there to celebrate the occasion.

A big FIRST!

Wednesday, I had my first experience white water rafting. I went with Jami Larsen, Gaye Bunting, Susan Dunn, Tricia Burt, Karrie Bunting, and Sina Knopf. David Bunting was our guide. It was great fun and I'll be braver next time. This time, I sat in the middle. Next time, I'll try the side with a paddle. The rapids were fun and not too scary. I didn't get out of the raft; I will next time. Of course, all of this next time stuff may never happen - who knows!

I was called a week before camp to fill in for someone who couldn't go and was hesitant at first. Ultimately, I decided to go and that it would be fun to be up there again! And fun it was! Arizona Weekend

The first weekend of August we made a trip to Arizona. Jerel was called to be the 2nd counselor in the Bishopric and so Doug had the blessing and privilege of ordaining Jerel to be a high priest and to stand in as he was set apart. It was a very wonderful experience. (Doug did wear a suit, but changed out of it before we could snap the photo.) :)

While we were there we had two wonderful days filled with family fun just visiting, eating, shopping, laughing, and having a good time together! Pictured below is Chase and Ryder (Jerel's oldest and youngest) with Grandpa Doug.

Haven’t blogged for a while, so let’s go back to the end of April when we went to the Pinewood Derby in Thousand Oaks where Johny, Eric and Kristi’s oldest, was a contestant. It was a fun event and best of all, he won!!

June found us with some wonderful blessings of caring for Megi and Ty’s girls, Mikah, Skyler, and Atley for a few days while they went to an adults only family reunion. Lindy brought her two up for a couple of those days and we all had a great time together. The very next week, Lindy and Jonathan went on a little getaway and left Ruthie and Adrian with us for a few days. We had such a good time!

The end of June found us in Cascade Idaho to support Doug’s brother, Roger as he rode 50 miles on his bike to celebrate his 75^th birthday. He rode from McCall to Riggins. Boyce rode, too, as did Roger’s daughter, Diane, and a few ward members. We drove the van which carried some of the riders and were there to cheer for them as they finished. Boyce was so quick, though, that he was already at the finish before we got there! Anyway, it was a fun experience for everyone. We stayed on a couple of more days and relaxed with Roger and Jackie’s good hosting.

From Cascade, we then went to Burley to spend a few days with Megi and Ty and the girls. Everyday while we were there, Grandpa Doug bought the girls shaved ice at Snoasis which they loved!

We celebrated Atley’s first birthday.

We did a few little jobs around the house and it felt good to be needed and helpful.

We enjoyed a small-town celebration of July 4^th by going to a town called Almo. They had a small parade highlighted by tons of candy being thrown to the crowd. We then went to the church building and enjoyed a 4^th of July program. From there, we went to the grassy area and were fed a wonderful barbecue meal followed by foot races, 3-legged races, egg toss. Doug and I tried the egg toss, but alas, it broke in my hands.

We are blessed to enjoy Ty’s family who live in Burley and they include us in their celebrations and fun and we love them for that.

We had a new experience coming home as we traveled with a little 9 week old puppy, bringing it back as a favor for an acquaintance here in Bakersfield who purchased the pup out of Logan, UT. It saved him from having to fly the pup here and we enjoyed the little gal. We stayed the night with Boyce and Suzanne on our way home and they helped us a lot with her. She did pretty well that night and was a fabulous traveler. We just set her down on the floor by our feet on a towel and she was very content.

We had a wonderful twelve days and look forward to future times with family and friends.

Projects - Before & After

We've been doing some much needed projects over the past few weeks and some have asked for photos, so here goes! The first two are of the old wooden fence that separates us from our neighbors directly behind our house.

These next three photos are of the new block wall that is in place of that old wooden fence. We went in halves for the cost of the wall and the neighbor had it built. He built it on the actual property line, giving us a couple of more feet on that level.

The next two photos are of our terribly broken down garage floor. The alkali in the soil pretty-much destroyed it.

This shows the garage area after the old cement was removed, the plastic membrane laid down and a shallow covering of sand placed on top of it.

These two show the beautiful new floor. So nice and clean. Doug hasn't moved his stuff back in yet; wants to give it plenty of time to cure.

This last photo is of the trench that's been dug to accommodate a retaining wall. We've had it half way all these years and now we'll get it completed. Doug hired a young man from his seminary class to do most of this digging and also tearing down of the old wood fence. It was much faster than if Doug had done it. Once that retaining wall is completed, then we'll get the yard back to normal, plant some more grass where all that dirt is piled now and then we'll landscape the level in front of the wall. Still lots more work, but it's coming along!

Spring Break!

Spring break brought us great joy as we spent time with our children and grandchildren. We went to Burley, ID and spent a few days with Megi, Ty and their girls. We feasted on the words of Megi and Ty as they spoke in sacrament meeting. We played with the girls, went to a movie, went out to dinner, played Rook (the girls won), did some shopping, visited a couple of cemeteries and found where my grandparents, an aunt, and my great grandparents are buried, and just had a relaxing, special time. Mikah - 4 yrs.

We arrived home Wednesday night and then Lindy, Jonathan, Ruthie and Adryan arrived Friday noon and spent conference/Easter weekend with us! We watched the kids Friday night so Lindy and Jonathan could go on a date to the Crystal Palace! Saturday, we watched conference, did some shopping between sessions, enjoyed Ruthie coloring her Easter eggs, the men attended Priesthood meeting and then we watched "The Blind Side." Great movie! Sunday, Doug made his usual visit to the men in the Tehachapi prison and we watched conference. Between sessions, Ruthie searched for her Easter eggs. After the final session, we enjoyed a beautiful Easter meal together and then had to say goodbye! Suffice it to say that it was a wonderful week.

Last Saturday, we attended the baptism of our grandson, Trevor, who is the 4th son of Jerel and Camille. It was a nice occasion. Doug acted as a witness as did Chase, Trevor's oldest brother. Camille spoke about the Holy Ghost in the opening exercises. Tanner and Trevor sang in the confirmation part. It was a joy to be there with this little guy and we are thankful for his choice to be baptized.

Let me tell you about my wall. Many years ago, before we had grandchildren, I bought a kit to embroider and in the center it says, "Grandchildren are like flowers in the garden of life." And then it has spaces to embroider the names of the grandchildren. So I did the stitchery on it and added names of the grandkids as they came along! Well, then it got full - 16! So I have made what I call an "addendum," and have added it to the wall. All around these embroidered works are photos of the grandchildren. I just recently redid the arrangement it to make room for the "addendum." I love it! I'm thankful for each of these precious grandchildren from our oldest who is 16 down to the youngest, 4 months! I haven't added his name, yet, because the adoption isn't final, but we're pretty certain all will go well. His picture is up, though! I love my wall!

December 4, our newest grandchild was born to Jerel and Camille. Meet Ryder Monson Campbell.

Christmas day, we got up early and headed to Santa Monica where we spent a short time with Lindy, Jonathan, Ruthie, and Adryan. Ruthie broke her wrist a few days before Christmas!

We then headed to Arizona where we spent the rest of Christmas day with our three kids who live there: Shad, Jodi, Owen, Nya, Riley; Jerel, Camille, Chase, Jordan, Tanner, Trevor, Ryder;

Saturday night, we enjoyed the beautiful lights on the Mesa Temple grounds with Shad and family and Janel and Ty.

Sunday, Ryder was given his name and a beautiful blessing by his dad, Jerel.

Monday, we said our goodbyes and headed back to California, Thousand Oaks to be exact where we stopped in to share Christmas gifts and love with Kristi and the four kids, Johny, Ginny, Katie, and Cecily. Eric was at work, so we missed him. We then headed back home, tired from such a quick trip, but happy to have made more memories. We arrived home to find Boyce and Suzanne here, who spent the rest of the week headquartered with us. I didn't get any photos of them, I'm sorry to say, but we had a great time. We were able to see all of our kids except Megi, Ty, and girls which made me sad. I'm learning to be content with my blessings and not always looking for something better. So I am thankful we could see as many of our loved ones as we did.

So there have been moments of loneliness and sadness - but only moments. The reason for the season is the same and we are thankful to celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Doug and I spent Thanksgiving week in Provo, Utah at the home of Boyce and Suzanne. Megi and her family as well as Lindy and her family joined us and we had a wonderful time. I've included pictures that tell the story. We are so thankful for our family. It was good to know that our three Arizona families, Jerel, Camille, and 4; Shad, Jodi, and 3; and Janel and Ty were together that day and that our Thousand Oaks family, Eric and Kristi were with her mother. Nobody had to be alone. We are blessed!

Sunday, the 18th of October our grandson received his Eagle Scout Award. He asked his Grandpa Doug to present it to him which was a proud moment for all of us. Chase, his father, Jerel, and grandfather, Doug are all Eagle Scouts. It was a blessing to be able to attend this special evening for Chase and we are so very proud of him. (Righteous pride, of course)
While we were in Mesa for this happy occasion, we were able to visit all of our children and grandchildren who reside in Arizona. Family is what it's all about and it was joyful to be together.

One year ago we bade farewell to our precious Lovebug Shannon, gone from mortality, but not gone from our lives. She is in our thoughts every single day. We miss her beyond words to explain. I yearn to hear her voice on the phone, to hold her tight in my arms, to laugh with her, to get her opinion on numerous subjects, to hear the joy in her voice as she made her house a home and loved her husband; to hear her testimony; to watch her serve others; to see her dance in the car. She lived large and I saw her spirit grow through every trial as she submitted to the many challenges that were hers. She became a wonder to all. We are an eternal family linked by eternal priesthood authority and covenants. Our faith in Jesus Christ and the reality of the great plan of happiness keeps us going forward, striving to live lives worthily so that we can be with Shannon in the future. I wish I were a poet or a good writer, so that I could say what I'm feeling inside. It's so deep and sacred I can't speak it.

Thanks to many, many friends and family who surround us with love. That support is amazing to feel and realize and I'm thankful.

Friday, August 13, Doug got into his rental car and headed for Minnesota, stopping to pick up my nephew in Salina, Utah on the way. They drove three days, arriving in Ely, Minnesota Sunday evening where they met up with Lindy and Jonathan, Jonathan's dad and his sister. Monday morning, they headed out on their adventure canoeing the boundary waters for five days, camping out, fishing, getting rained on, eating sometimes yukky food, enjoying beauty everywhere, and just having an overall good time. He returned Sunday night having had a great time. I took care of Ruthie, Lindy and Jonathan's little girl, and so I had a good time, too. I am glad Doug could have this experience and I'm glad he got home safely!

A week and a half ago when Ruthie was here, I asked her to throw a burnt matchstick into the trash. She darted to the bedroom and when she didn't return right away, I went to check on her. She was standing over the trash can staring intently and so I walked up behind her. This is what I saw! It looked just like that matchstick was hanging in midair! Upon a closer look, there was a web which caught it and held it. I can only imagine what was going through Ruthie's mind when she tossed that in and it stopped; no wonder she was just staring!

Our 16th grandchild was born June 25 to Megi and Ty. Atley Jacille weighed 8 lbs. 14 oz. and was 21 inches long. I was able to spend two weeks there in Burley, Idaho helping with the new one and playing with her two big sisters, Mikah and Skyler. It was a special time for me. I love them all so much.

The few flowers that I grow in my yard aside from fruit and vegetable blossoms bring me great happiness and peace. The yellow lantana remind me of Shannon; she loved the brightness of yellow. The other lantana bush displays orange and yellow blossoms. Snapdragons are always a favorite as they take me back to my childhood when I would gently pinch the blossom so that it looks like it's opening its mouth. Fascinating! (I still like to do it! ) My very favorite flower is the hibiscus. I am in awe as I enjoy its color and form. It's a beautiful Sunday; a beautiful summer day here in Bakersfield.

Soon, a new little granddaughter will arrive in this world to our family. I think of her often and in my mind's eye, I see her preparing to leave her immortal world, excited to come for her earthly experience to be a part of the Jones family. She's got a special Mommy and Daddy who love her already and will teach her all she needs to know to journey in this life. And she's got two big sisters who will just adore her and smother her with love! Not to mention grandparents, aunts, uncles, & cousins galore. It will be wonderful to welcome her here.

I feel blessed and thankful beyond words to describe, that I know the plan of happiness. I am blessed to be sealed eternally to Doug and for the hope we have of an eternal family. I know where our Shannon is and what she's doing. I wish I could actually hear her voice tell me how happy she is and how free she feels; I know it's true! I know that I still must work on this earth to complete my mission before I can go to her. I rejoice in my beautiful children and grandchildren who fill up my days with happiness, even though there are miles between us.

I know I am rambling, but it's how I'm feeling today!

This was my first target sheet used last night in a gun safety class I took. The small holes are using a 22 revolver and the large holes are using a 357 magnum revolver. I learned a lot and had fun shooting. I did get tired after a few rounds. These old arms and eyes just ain't what they used to be! (Sigh)

Our daughter, Lindy, posted this on her blog and I'm so impressed with it that I'm sharing it on mine! Our little granddaughter, Ruthie, has explained in a way only a little child can, about why the Lord instituted marriage. This could be part of the proclamation to the world!!

This past weekend was the Salt Lake Marathon in which many of our family members participated. They wanted to do it for Shannon & Lindy, making it our annual fundraiser. With the help of countless friends and family, we raised $16,000 so far which is $1000 more than we had hoped. We thank all of you who donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and remind you that it's not too late, if you forgot. Suzanne, Boyce's wife, did the bike tour which is the same as the marathon distance. Boyce ran the 5K, Kat, Paul's fiance, ran the half marathon while Jerel and Paul ran the full marathon, 26.2 miles.

You can see the logo on the front of the shirts we all wore in the picture below. On the back of those shirts is a photo of Shannon with words, "In memory of our Shannon Lovebug 1981-2008 and a photo of Lindy with words, "For many more memories with Lindy." Below the pictures it says, "Taking steps to cure Cystic Fibrosis."

There was such an outpouring of support from family and friends on every side and we know our girl was there with us. So I am so exhilarated still from this powerful experience and I am thankful to our children who participated and who came to watch and who supported from a distance. Truly there is joy in this life.

Easter vacation found us once again in Arizona where we enjoyed the Mesa Arizona Easter Pageant, Jesus the Christ. We never tire of this beautiful depiction of the Savior's life. Joining us were Jerel and family, Shad and family, and Janel and family. The rest of the week was spent in watching Trevor and Tanner play their baseball games, taking family photos of Shad & Jodi, eating together, watching Owen and Nya hunt easter eggs, visiting, taking a side trip to Apache Junction and just relaxing. I'm sorry I don't pictures of Ty, Janel, Jerel, & Camille. I messed up! We left Saturday morning and finished our week in Santa Monica with Lindy and family. Easter is one of my favorite times of the year and especially this year, the resurrection of our Lord is more significant than ever as we anticipate being with our Shannon Lovebug again.

And as someone famous and well loved always says, "We're having joy in our posterity."

Our Megi was Bakersfield Jr. Miss back in 2001 and she still loves the program, serving and helping wherever she lives. This article appeared the Bakersfield Californian this past Sunday and yet again, our girl shined brightly not only in her physical charm, but in the beauty of her character. There's no place like home!

I love my home; I feel the spirit here almost always and I feel love from my good husband. He has worked all of his life to provide shelter and warmth, food and clothing, every need and countless wants. He loves me and he loves our posterity. There is safety here and protection from the swirling storms about.

Home is in the temple and last Saturday we enjoyed a beautiful 2-hr time doing initiatory work for those who've gone on. While doing that, I was reminded of the beautiful promises made to me so many years ago. I feel a peace as I think of my covenants which embrace our beautiful 15 children and 15 grandchildren. I see us all in my mind's eye together in the eternities, never to be separated again by the distance of this earth.

The scriptures give me those same feelings of safety and protection and familiarity. They calm my troubled heart and give me reassurance in the down times. When I read and study them, I am home.

D&C 38:7-9 But behold, verily, verily, I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you. I am in your midst and ye cannot see me; But the day soon cometh that ye shall see me, and know that I am; for the veil of darkness shall soon be rent, and he that is not purified shall not abide the day. Wherefore, gird up your loins and be prepared. Behold, the kingdom is yours, and the enemy shall not overcome."

Those are amazing verses for me. They bring comfort and strength to my days of discouragement. Everything will be fine. The Savior is in our midst, I just can't see him. Wow, I need to remember that so I behave reverently always. I need to continue to be watchful and see that I am prepared and then have confidence that the enemy will not overcome.

There truly is NO PLACE LIKE HOME! I am thankful.

Another goodbye!

This probably seems silly to some, but my heart strings were stretched today as I tossed out the container of lovely body butter given to me by Shannon and Paul last Mother's Day. I've enjoyed it all this time and now it's gone. It's very hard for me to let go of these little reminders of my Lovebug. Where she is, she doesn't need these mixtures to make her skin soft and radiant. She's already there! I'll miss the sweet vanilla smell after my morning bath which would bring her close to me.

Our Lovebug's marker has been set and Doug and I went to see it this morning. It is truly beautiful and fitting for our precious daughter. It's a quiet and peaceful place to rest.

Big Change!

When we moved into our house fall of 1975, there was a scrawny pine tree that looked half dead. We watered and nurtured it over the years and this is what it became! A Giant! It was lovely for a time, even dropping pine cones that looked like roses! It gave us lots of shade and we loved it. As time passed, however, it got too big and when we'd have strong winds, limbs would break threatening our house and the neighbor's as well. The past two years, the needles have been dropping continually, making a big mess in not only our yard, but all of the neighbors. The pine cones made a terrible mess this year, breaking apart and going everywhere. So we got fed up and decided it was time for the tree to go! Last Saturday, it was felled by our neighbor. So farewell to our big tree and to the shade. . . . and to the mess!

Saturday morning, Doug & I traveled to Henderson, NV where we enjoyed a special weekend with our grandson, Riley. We first watched Riley play his basketball game and he's quite the player! His team is called the Lakers, which pro team is his passion and he knows "everything" about them.

We had some time after the ball game and so Shad, Boyce, Doug and I went to see Hoover Dam. I'd never been there before and it was very inspiring to see it and to know the history behind it. At the present time, they are building a bridge across the dam for security measures to keep our country safe. In the photo you can see the two sides as they proceed. The arch is beginning to form.

Riley's birthday party was next on the schedule and we ate pizza and birthday cake till we were stuffed!

Sunday was Riley's 12th birthday and he was spotlighted in sacrament meeting, received his Faith in God award in Primary and then received the Aaronic Priesthood and was ordained to the office of deacon by his Grandpa Campbell.

Friday, we went to Big Bear and met up with Lindy, Jonathan, and Ruthie! Ruthie had her first experience at skiing, attending a camp for the day where she learned what to do. Jonathan enjoyed skiing most of the day as well. As for Lindy, Doug and I, we cozied up next to a warm fire and drank hot chocolate. We enjoyed being together and sharing in Ruthie's new experience.

They served together in the Austrian mission. It's always good to find out that those you worked with and enjoyed and cared about are still strong in the faith and serving.

Christmas surprise

A few years ago, I bought a plant to hang on the patio not really knowing what it was except that it didn't require a lot of water. Imagine my surprise when at Christmas time, it blossomed into this beautiful Christmas gift. I did a little research and it's called a Christmas cactus. Now I look forward to each December to see these blooms burst in vibrant pink as if to celebrate the birth of the Savior. It gladdens my heart especially this year as I miss my Lovebug so much!

Hawaii - Day 5

It rained again all night long. We got up at 5:40 a.m. in order to get Lindy and Jonathan to the airport. After dropping them off, we made our way to McDonalds for breakfast and then made our way back to Pearl Harbor to take a tour of USS Missouri and what a treat that was. That is a magnificent vessel. World War II ended on her decks on September 2, 1945 and she is one of two so-called "bookends." She faces the USS Arizona which lies beneath the ocean after being sunk by the Japanese. That marked the beginning of our entry into World War II - December 7, 1941. Amazing and sobering history.

In harbor, we saw the aircraft carrier, Reagan, which had just come in the day before. We couldn't see it up close, but it still brought patriotic feelings to my heart.

After we finished the tour we found a beach-side marketplace, the Aloha Tower, where there were lots of shops and restaurants. We found a place to eat called Gordon Biersch, then perused the shops.

All too soon, it was time to return the rental car, get on the shuttle and get to our individual departure gates.

My flight went off without a hitch. I flew to Kauai where I had a 2 1/2 hour layover. Then on to LA, arriving at 5 and then waiting for Gaye for an hour and a half. Karl picked us up and off we went to pick up Ruthie!

During the late morning time, we saw several rainbows, one was complete and so beautiful. I love rainbows. They are one of so many witnesses of God's reality.

Thirty two years ago, this wonderful son of ours was born, right on his due date! And that's pretty much how he's lived is life. He works diligently at doing his duty and doing it correctly! From the time he was little he has loved to sing thereby bringing joy to our family and to so many others with his gift. He has a terrific sense of humor and a bright sense of what's right and what's wrong. He has a tender side that shines forth in compassion and thoughtfulness to others. As his mother, I've been the recipient of many of his thoughtful ways and his wife will reap all of those benefits, too!

Hawaii - Day 4

We began our day with a drive to Sunset Beach where there are lots of surfing competitions. The ocean was pretty rough that day and there were signs telling folks not to swim. However, there were a few surfers out there trying their skills. At one point before we got to Sunset Beach we pulled off the main road and went to where Lindy lived her second year while attending BYUH. She lived a stone's throw away from the ocean line and had a beautiful view. It was fun to see her place and the window that was hers.

Upon leaving the beach, we headed back to Hale'iwa for the shaved ice that Lindy loved and recommended so highly. And we were not disappointed! It was better than anything I've had stateside and doesn't come close to a plain old sno-cone. Very worth the drive and the time.

The rest of the day was like being in another world for a few hours. When we first arrived at the PCC, we were greeted with a shell lei and we met our tour guide for the day. We were transported to Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, New Zealand and of course, Hawaii via the Polynesian Cultural Center. We visited each country and saw their song and dance and culture. We were given a canoe tour and from the banks of their little river and enjoyed a show performed on canoes.

We attended a luau that night and enjoyed a meal of native foods. The food didn't sit too well with me. We were given a lei of real flowers as we entered the Luau.

After the luau, we attended the show, Horizons, which was fabulous. We had 2nd row seats and so we could see their countenances as well as their song and dance. During intermission, we were served sherbet and fruit. I hated to see the show end because it meant I had to go back to reality.

It rained off and on all day long and I didn't mind. The PCC gave us ponchos and so we kept pretty dry.

I loved the PCC. They are a happy people, full of humor and spirituality. They live a slower pace and a much simpler life.

Hawaii - Day 3

We spent a quiet leisurely Sabbath morning and then attended church at noon about a block from where we were staying. It was pouring rain, so we drove. This was a great ward, full of warm friendly people who made us feel welcome and cared about.

After our meetings, we baked our pizza for dinner and then went to the temple grounds. So peaceful and beautiful. We learned the temple will be closed as of Dec. 27 for 18 months to get some much needed renovations.

Jonathan and Lindy then dropped Gaye and I off at a spot on the BYUH campus to enjoy a fireside where Sheri Dew and Wendy Nelson were the speakers. We got there early and sat on the front row. We weren't sorry. They were inspiring and we came away filled. There was a choir called Musical Truth who sang several songs during the evening and they brought a spirit to my soul I can't explain. Their sound was so mellow. Their countenances were angel like. I loved them! I came away from that evening filled to the brim.

Hawaii - Day 2

DAY 2

After breakfast on Saturday, we went to Pearl Harbor where we were richly fed the history of December 7, 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the terrible destruction, particularly the USS Arizona. We saw a film depicting that awful day with real footage. Then we got on a shuttle boat that took us to the Memorial which straddles the sunken battleship. This was a very reverent place and we were instructed to be silent and the men were to remove their hats. On an end wall is listed the names of all those who are entombed in this ship, more than 1100. It was very sobering and humbling. What a sacrifice! I am thankful for the many men and women who have given their lives in the militaryof this country and for those who continue to serve.

After leaving this memorial, us three girls decided we wanted to hit the swap meet and so left Jonathan to do some more touring there at the harbor. We found some pretty good bargains and made a few purchases. I would have bought more, but space to take it home was the problem. As we were heading out of the meet, the individual booths were closing down. We passed by this one where this precious little one was sound asleep. It was so precious.

We went back to pick up Jonathan and then headed to the North Shore and to our rental house. It was very rainy the further North we got and because our rental was up on a hillside, the car skidded on the wet surface. Lindy mastered it, thought, and we made it to the place where we would be staying.

After we got settled in our little house, we hopped in the car and drove on to the little town of Hale'iwa where we have a great place for our dinner. Hale'iwa Joe's! Good food and good service.

Tummies full, we drove back to Laie and purchased groceries at Foodland for the Sabbath and then went back to our "house" and settled in for the night. Very peaceful . . . . . . . that is until about 3 in the morning when a very loud rooster decided it was time to announce the coming of the morning. He did so for the rest of the night and into the daylight hours. I tried to have nice thoughts!

Hawaiian Dream Come True

Day 1

Doug and I picked up Gaye Bunting at 12:30 p.m. and then headed to LAX. The traffic was heavy once we got near Santa Monica. It was awful for Doug going home - took him 3 1/2 hours! Thanks, Honeyman!

Once at the airport, Gaye and I had to split up as we were taking different airlines. They were next to each other, so that was good. I showed my boarding pass and then stepped onto the escalator. I heard, "There she is" and looked up to see Lindy and Jonathan a few steps up from me! That was amazing! After clearing security, we went to Chili's for some dinner, then to our gate where they had begun to board and on we went. I got the window seat!

Soon we were in the air crossing the Pacific Ocean to paradise. The flight was a little more than five hours. Gaye's flight was delayed two hours, so we picked up our Alamo rental car and went to the Hilton in Hawaiian Village where Jonathan got our room, then we headed back to pick up Gaye at the airport. She got in close to 11 which was 1:00 a.m. California time. While driving to the airport, it rained. It was warm and humid. Honolulu is a big bustling city with freeways, traffic, high rise buildings - just like a big city on the mainland.

I've decided that in this world where the media covers only the negative, I'm going to make an effort to look for the good. This Thanksgiving season is being totally overlooked and I refuse to do that. So......

Today when I got to Walmart first thing this morning and was walking toward the store, a lady was walking toward me with two full baskets of purchases. However, one of her baskets was being pushed along side her by an elderly man and as I drew closer, I could tell from the conversation that he was being a gentleman and helping her with her load. He got her to her car, asked if she needed further help, and then went on to find his own car. It was sweet and a good reminder that there are lots of good people in this world in spite of all the evil swirling around us. I am thankful for that reminder and for the people doing good.

When our Lindy was born and the doc announced, "It's a girl!" I could hardly believe it. At last another girl in the family. She has been a strength and a joy to us all of her life. This sweet daughter is a powerful example of courage. She doesn't like to draw attention to herself if it can be avoided and she serves others daily without counting the cost. She is tireless in moving forward in her life, living each day to its fullest. Nicknamed Lindy Dolly, she brings love and happiness to our lives everyday. Last night I attended a Town Hall Meeting to discuss Proposition 8. There were three people advocating a "NO" vote on the proposition and three encouraging "Yes." One of the "No" speakers was Dave Richmond, a teacher for many years at East High. He knows his stuff regarding US History and the Constitution. (He was the East High coach for the "We, the People" competition for years.)

Anyway, I went anticipating a healthy discussion on this proposition and that's how it began. However, the further into the meeting we got, the angrier and louder and more abusive the folks who are against this proposition became. By the time the meeting ended, I felt physically ill and even had a headache. I found myself wishing I had not attended - safer at home in my own world. There was an evil feeling all around us as we listened to distortions, misrepresentations, accusations, condescensions, anger, belittling, etc.

I've done some thinking about that experience and pondered what my responsibility is. My dear friend, Gaye, reminds me that we can be assured that if we do all we can, the Lord will win this battle for us. It is shown over and over in the scriptures. So my attendance showing my support for this issue hopefully will lend itself to helping this to pass, along with my time and energy to get the message out. I think the feelings I had must be a sample of how others have felt when they tried to teach correct principles and were scoffed at and scorned. Noah, Lehi, Nephi, Abinadi, Joseph Smith - the Savior - all were pelted by this type of hate from their enemies. I'm nothing compared to these great prophets, so I best buck up and stand immovable and steadfast for what is right. I need to bold - never hateful - but bold in what I know to be true.

It's really hard. I don't like it. So what? I hope to learn from this and grow and not be afraid to show where I stand. I want to be found on the Lord's side, not cowering in fear of men. Boy, I've got a long way to go!

Ramblings

It's a beautiful Sabbath day. The sky is a rich blue and the weather is mild. Doug and I drove to Kern Valley to attend their sacrament meeting and see the children's program. The spirit was strong there and the little children warmed our hearts.

Some days it feels like the loss of Shannon's association gets easier and then the past two days have been hard again for me. Most of the flowers we received have died and as I dispose of them, it pulls at my heart. We did plant one bush outside and so I hope that one will go on and remind us of our Lovebug.

I'm writing down things that come to my mind about Shannon. I don't want to forget. The other night I was watching a recorded episode of "Touched by an Angel" and when Della Reese started singing, "When you walk down the road, heavy burden, heavy load. . . . " etc., my mind was filled with the memory of Shannon and I singing that together every time we watched it years ago and then just recently when she was here. Now it's a solo on my part - ugh! I better just listen and then I'll hear Shannon's voice.

I find myself wishing so badly that I could have actually hugged my girl and verbally said goodbye - you know the things that you say to one another when you say goodbye. Even though we talked a lot about her death over the past years, I just didn't get to do it at that final moment. I know she knows. But my heart has to catch up with what my mind knows.

Today I went through the big bin of Shannon's medications and cried as I did. Mostly because of the huge load she carried just to stay alive. Myriads of pills for this, that, and the other. Different doses of the same kinds of pills. It's amazing that she was able to keep up with it all. She knew what she had, what she needed, who to call for which drug and when to call. Just amazing. And then all of her diabetic stuff as well. What a valiant fight she fought to keep going from day to day. I am thankful she's done with all that. No more pills, no more IV's, no more lab work, no more hospital stays, no more changing her record EVERY time she registered at the hospital. Two and a half years she was married, and they NEVER got it right - no, not once! No more PFT's, no more photopheresis, no more ordering meds, no more changing her insulin pump needle. No more, no more, no more. She must feel so free and unburdened. I miss her so much and my great comfort is knowing she's gone on ahead. How I love my Lovebug girl!

Sunday, October 5, our sweet Shannon left this earth; moving on ahead of us. Our sorrow is poignant and real, but not without comfort. Elder Quentin Cook was the final speaker of General Conference and his words have touched me over and over. Today I have had a hard time. The peace that comes from knowing that Christ knows how we are all feeling and can succor us in our afflictions brings calm to my aching heart. As I think of so many others who have lost loved ones, I look to them as my example and strength. I can do this. I know the great plan of happiness is real. I know where Shannon is and that someday I'll be with her again. Nevertheless, my tears come easily when I think of the finality of our earthly relationship. I can't describe how much I will miss her.

It seems like everything I did today, everything I looked at, every thought pointed to Shannon. I don't want to forget her in any way. And yet remembering is so painful. I know it will become easier - it just takes time. And so I must do as our beloved Pres. Monson said and that is to find someone who is having a hard time and do something for them. That will bless my life no doubt.

Boyce and Suzanne were married in the Salt Lake Temple September 26. We had a beautiful time with them in the temple as their loved was sealed for time and all eternity. The surrounding events were beautiful and the joy we feel for our son and his new bride is difficult to put into words. I will blog more about this event as I get more photos. They really tell the story.

Today, our dryer died! So this is what our backyard looks like because I had two loads of wet laundry. We decided to take advantage of the free heat and this is what we got! How I wish I had the good old clothesline back! When I look out the window, I just have to laugh because it looks like . . . . I'll let you fill in the blank! I hope we get it fixed tomorrow because I HAVE to do underwear! Yikes!

This morning, I picked all of our pumpkins except one small one that is very new and very green. I had no idea we would get this kind of harvest and so I'm going to have to give them away. A new school year began two weeks ago and that brought Doug back for his 5th consecutive year of teaching early-morning seminary. He has a passion for this program and takes very little time off, wanting to keep continuity in the class plus hoping that the kids will know that because it's important for them to be there, it's important for him to be there.

He gets up at 5 every weekday morning and is the first one to arrive at the Church building. This gives him time to set up and get everything prepared to begin at 6:00 am. When he gets home from seminary he immediately studies for the morrow's lesson and then reviews it again that night, spending a couple of hours everyday in study.

Dough nuts, cupcakes, breakfast and other treats help brighten the early hour for the kids as well as lots of videos to illustrate the points he's teaching. This past week, they watched a portion of "Nativity Story" because they are studying the New Testament.

Frustration sometimes develops because he so wants the kids to grasp the importance of the gospel and for it to begin to grow within them. There are some kids who are alert and ready to learn and others who are there because they are "forced" to be there. His desire is to reach into each heart and help them to find light and truth. He wants them to be armed for their day at school where they will be attacked by the darts of the adversary all day long.

He's devoted and dedicated to the youth of the stake as he strives to teach them each morning in seminary. I'm thankful, personally, for his example.

What a fun surprise to have Shad be born the same day as Jerel, August 23, just four years later! Shad's our Utah boy, born shortly after we moved to Lewiston, UT to try our hand at dairying. He was a huge bright spot in an otherwise difficult life as we transitioned to small town living. Sometimes, Shad would get lost in the shuffle because he'd be off doing his own thing, quietly. He has the gift of compassion and has befriended the underdog lots of times in his life. Give him any kind of a ball and he's a happy man - was that way from the time he was a toddler!
Shad, thank you for being such a fine man, a good son, husband, and father. We love you so much. Happy birthday!

Yes, our second son is 40! How well we can remember the joy this baby boy brought into our lives when he was born. And that continues to this day! He loves sports and scouting; he got excellent grades in school; he's dependable and helpful; he can fix just about anything; he is a righteous son, husband and father. Not so long ago, a beautiful baby girl was about to be born and we were chosen to be the blessed parents. We waited for the arrival of our new baby, not knowing if it was a boy or a girl. We were most delighted to welcome our first daughter, Janel, to our family. She was a tiny little thing and such a calm, undemanding baby. Her natural curls and big brown eyes won the hearts of all those she met. She holds a very special and important spot in our family and in our hearts. We love you, Janel. Happy Birthday!

GOOD NEWS and bad!

Shannon is in the hospital again. I took her down for an MRI on Tuesday as well as her clinic visit for transplant. She'd been having some shortness of breath for a few days and had lost weight. Wednesday morning, she had a bronch in order to biopsy her lungs and see what was going on.

First the good news!!!! The MRI showed a marked improvement. They said the fungus is receding in the orbit as well as the brain, so there is much to be thankful for!

The biopsy of her lungs showed a bad pneumonia as well as a mild rejection! So they started her immediately on three different antibiotics as well as the heavy doses of steroids. They are hoping to send her home Saturday, IF the x-ray shows improvement. She'll continue with the two antifungal drugs and then in addition, have the antibiotics for a couple of weeks.

I do not boast in my own strength, not in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God. Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things;"

My heart is full of gratitude and humility this day for the tender mercies of the Lord, for miracles, for blessings unmeasured; surely my cup runneth over.

Megi's finding her niche in Burley, had 11 girls show up for soccer practice (Megi's the Declo High School soccer coach), is going to sing for the Prophet Monson at the Twin Falls Temple Dedication.

Johny knows all 13 Articles of Faith and he's only 7!

Shannon's has had a wonderful week, free of nausea, and because of that she's able to do more things and is beginning to regain her strength. She still walks a tightrope trying to balance the drugs she needs with keeping her kidneys from failing and keeping her lungs from being rejected. Right now, the balance is working. I wish to say what's in my heart and the words don't come.

It's such a joyous time for Boyce and Suzanne as they move forward with their wedding plans. They are so very happy.

My son-in-law, Jonathan, was put in the Bishopric today. There's nothing quite like watching our children grow in the gospel and rise up in testimony.

Shad and Jodi are making it easy for me to come watch their two come October.

I have an eternal companion who loves me and I love him.

What a joyous day it was when Clete Eric was placed in my arms as a foster baby, so sweet with light, wavy hair and a gentle disposition. And the best was when we officially adopted him and had him sealed to us in the Los Angeles Temple. Drummer, soccer player, Eagle Scouter, priesthood holder, high school and college grad, husband, and father - all are titles he can proudly claim. We are thankful Eric came to us 41 years ago. We love you very much, son!

Most everyone knows of the battle that our Shannon has been waging over the past 2 1/2 weeks. Her disease is stable for now and we are thankful that she can have this time of peace to recover and get stronger so that she'll be able to go home. We rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ and all that He does for us. We need to pray for her to have all of the tools she needs to be able to endure well whatever lies ahead - one day at a time. We love you, Lovebug!

We are happy and excited to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of our son, Boyce. Suzanne will become his eternal companion September 26, 2008 and we are so pleased to welcome her into our family. We love her already and are happy to see them both so in love and ready to start eternity together!

Monday, May 26, we celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary. The years have flown by with lots of hills and valleys. We're together yet and we love each other more than ever. We are thankful for our temple marriage and the covenants we've made that, if kept, will keep our family together forever.

We worked hard Saturday and Monday as well as having some great recreational activities. We rented a lift so that we could paint the trim on the second story of our house. Though the pictures don't show it, I was in the basket with Doug a lot of the time as we both scraped and painted the trim. We vowed not to let it go so long again. Too much work!

Doug trimmed our big elm tree in the back way back and so we have lots more light coming into the family room and the grass will probably grow better back there. You can see the huge pile of cuttings that we now have to dispose of. We cut back a big valencia orange tree just outside of the pool yard.

I'm missing my mom today. This Mother's Day, I honor her and pay tribute to the beautiful woman she is. She was born in England and raised in Ontario Canada. She joined the Church in her late teens and soon thereafter, married my Dad. She bore six of us kids and devoted her life to her sweetheart, to us, and to the gospel.

Dad passed away after only 48 years of marriage and it left her so lonely for those long 24 years. She tried her best to keep busy and she longed for the day when she could go be with him.

Mom was a fabulous knitter and taught me the skill, although I never did nearly as well as she did. She taught me to love homemaking and motherhood. She loved me unconditionally and comforted me over the years in my times of despair and cheered me on during the times of success. She taught me cleanliness and order. I knew she loved the Lord. I knew she loved my Dad so deeply there are words to describe.

Mom, I miss you and I have complete peace and security knowing you and Daddy are together preparing a place for all of us to come. You are not far away for I feel your influence all around me. Thank you for being the best Mom. I love you!

No pictures this time. I just need to vent a bit. I've been reading family blogs, listening to old tapes of my kids when they were little and when they were not so little. I've been working on Mikah's bedspread and got a fun email from one of my grandsons. I have also recently learned that a very long-time and good friend, Paula Vineyard, has been diagnosed with cancer from head to toe and all inside. I've spent the past two days helping a friend clean out her mother-in-law's apartment after she passed away unexpectedly. All of these things, unseemingly related, and yet bring out all of my emotions and so now I'm sitting here crying! Thankfully, I have the gospel with all of the promises therein and I can seek comfort in prayer. I will go do that right now.

On the road again, and again, and again!

On Friday, the 14th, we hopped in the car and traveled to Provo where we stayed with Boyce. Saturday was the wedding of our nephew, Denton and we attended the wedding in the Salt Lake Temple, then a luncheon and then the reception. The happy couple are pictured first and next to them is pictured myself with my two brothers and three sisters. It was a short time, but it was good.

Sunday morning, we got back into the car and headed to Phoenix. It was snowing when we left Provo and continued to snow on us most of the day as we traveled. There were places where we could go only 35-40 mph because the roads were white and slick or slushy. It was beautiful scenery and we talked of how thankful we were to have a comfortable, warm car in which to travel in such adverse conditions.

We stayed with Megi and Ty this time (we rotate) and their two little girls and enjoyed so much cuddling and playing and visiting. Monday night, everyone gathered at Jerel and Camille's house in Mesa where we ate together and played together and renewed our love. We have 9 grandchildren living in Arizona at the present time. Tuesday night, we all assembled together at the Mesa temple grounds where we enjoyed the pageant yet again. I checked back in my journal and found that since 1995, the first year we saw the pageant, we have attended 12 times, missing only 1998 and 2001. We never tire of its beauty and its message and the spirit we feel.

Wednesday morning, we got in the car and headed back home. It was a good trip and we made more happy memories. I regret that I don't have more pictures. I was too busy enjoying.
